A common bond between legal work and car restoration & servicing is the extreme attention to detail and care both require. We at Selby TVR have found that while our main focus is high performance vehicles, these vehicles can also be traditional car as well, since the techniques we use and learn in legal exercises can be applied equally across the spectrum.
Moot Court is a type of legal exercise heard primarily by an appellate panel, and focuses on specific points of law and case concentration. It can be compared with a final appeal in a case, and is heard by a small court that has already reviewed the case in-depth in order to make an informed decision. A mock trial is a full trial exercise, manually presided over by a realistic judge and jury panel. It is a realistic simulation of the real courtroom process, and is used in legal education as well as in litigation strategy and planning for the parties involved in the trial.
Each legal exercise is extremely detailed in nature, and encourages participants to think differently about the way their cases can be analyzed, their arguments presented and their strategies adjusted in order to maximize effectiveness in order to succeed in their legal quest. This similar approach to making the most of every legal argument is what we have integrated into our work at Selby TVR, and has lead to many successful restorations and optimizations. It also offers an appreciation of the court process, or experiences that should not be taken personally, and may even “influence the way you communicate with non-lawyers.” The skills seen are in intensive forms of legal education, and emphasize a mixture of teamwork and troubleshooting. Courtroom workshops usually include role play, while the workshop for the competition “focuses solely on mastering the components of court cases.”
Essentially, the idea is that students gain experience and practical knowledge to help them prepare for other competitive commercial situations in legal practice, while also gaining exposure to the process of law. Such competitions also offer students a chance to develop their skills, improve existing ones, and master the areas of the law that may interest them.
Just as moot courts and mock trials offer legal education for those aspiring to be successful in their careers, many skills cross the line from the courtroom to the garage in commercial and logic-based fields. At the end of the day, the training is similar, and Selby TVR is that much better for the experience.
